Accelerating Innovation Through Core Modernization

Accelerating Innovation Through Core Modernization

A leading U.S. bank embarked on a multiyear initiative to modernize its core banking platform, build out a scalable API infrastructure, and reimagine its data ecosystem in the cloud. To help evaluate progress and ensure long-term success, the bank engaged SolomonEdwards as a third-party advisor to assess project scope, delivery execution, risks and strategic alignment. The resulting evaluation validated the transformation strategy while identifying critical gaps and opportunities to improve readiness for the next phase of innovation.

Challenge

The client was running a legacy community bank core and had developed a complex layer of batch integrations into homegrown and thirdparty vendor applications to support its business objectives. The bank embarked on an enterprise-wide modernization initiative to strategically realign its technology posture—spanning a core banking conversion, moving to a cloud-based infrastructure, and the deployment of an API framework to enhance interoperability and customer experience. With the program advancing toward MVP release, the bank sought an objective, comprehensive assessment of its efforts to date. The goal: confirm alignment between strategic vision and execution, identify hidden risks, and ensure the project remains on track to realize its full value.

Solution

SolomonEdwards mobilized a cross-functional technology advocacy team composed of industry experts, business analysts and data specialists. The team conducted a thorough review of:

  • Business and financial cases, delivery approach and technical implementation
  • Project artifacts including RAID logs, UAT frameworks and planned training strategies
  • Data infrastructure, quality and remediation efforts, and cloud migration plans
  • Security protocols, stakeholder alignment, and customer and operational impacts

Through in-depth interviews, document review and expert analysis, we evaluated project history, current state and readiness for future phases. The assessment culminated in a detailed presentation to the bank’s Board of Directors, including key observations, identified risks and strategic recommendations.

Outcome

The bank’s leadership received confirmation that its approach to core, data and integration modernization was well-founded, along with actionable guidance to strengthen execution and mitigate potential risks ahead of MVP rollout.

Our assessment surfaced several key gaps and provided a remediation roadmap, positioning the bank to move forward with greater confidence and clarity. We continue to support the client as a strategic partner for future phases of the program, providing trusted, unbiased guidance on high-impact decisions as the bank advances its digital transformation and customer experience goals.
