Unlocking Legacy Media Archives for a Global Media Company

Unlocking Legacy Media Archives for a Global Media Company

SolomonEdwards partnered with a global media and entertainment company to resolve critical challenges stemming from fragmented legacy archive systems. We restored access to decades of historical metadata, enabling rights verification, content reuse and the preservation of institutional knowledge. Through custom dashboards and data visualization tools, we transformed inaccessible data into a dynamic, future-ready resource.

Challenge

A leading global media and entertainment company faced significant operational risk due to decades of legacy metadata locked away in outdated or obsolete archival systems. This fragmented data environment—resulting from system mergers, format deprecations and inconsistent documentation—prevented access to critical asset information including rights metadata, location history and historical records.

Without intervention, the company risked losing irreplaceable institutional knowledge, limiting rights validation, monetization and readiness for future system migrations. They needed a partner with expertise in digital asset management, data integration and archival intelligence to not only restore access, but also future-proof their archival ecosystem.

Solution

We partnered with the client to conduct a holistic assessment of legacy datasets across archival systems, identifying structure, quality and utility of critical metadata. From there, we designed and delivered a custom data visualization and access framework that brought dormant databases back to life through interactive, user-friendly dashboards.

Our solution included:

  • Reconnection of legacy systems using tailored data connectors and transformation pipelines.
  • Development of dynamic dashboards for advanced search, filtering, and CSV export across millions of historical asset records.
  • Surfacing of frozen metadata fields and location histories critical for legal, research and technical workflows.
  • Alignment of system outputs with digital preservation best practices to ensure future migration readiness and ongoing sustainability.

By blending archival science with advanced data engineering and UX principles, we helped the client not only restore but reimagine access to their most valuable legacy content.

Outcome

Our partnership enabled the media organization to:

  • Reclaim decades of institutional knowledge and asset provenance lost in previous migrations.
  • Facilitate rights validation and compliance through accessible, searchable historical metadata.
  • Uncover monetization opportunities by identifying remasterable or reusable assets.
  • Equip stakeholders with intuitive research tools that improved responsiveness to legal and operational inquiries.
  • Establish a future-ready, centralized interface for managing legacy asset information—laying a foundation for long-term digital sustainability.

The result: improved operational efficiency, legal readiness and long-term archival sustainability. This engagement transformed legacy media data from a liability into a strategic asset, empowering the client to preserve its history while advancing its future.
