For many middle-class families, the start of school is an exciting and hopeful time, with students and parents alike looking forward to the ritual of shopping for back-to-school supplies. But for homeless families, the requirements associated with school starting are another obstacle they simply can’t navigate without help.
The Star of Hope organization responds to this urgent need, along with a full range of housing and other needs to support Houston’s homeless. Members of SolomonEdwards’ Houston team recently participated in one of the organization’s many volunteer service opportunities. Every year, volunteers from SolomonEdwards help pack hundreds of backpacks with school supplies for the children who reside at Star of Hope’s Women and Family Development Center.
Candace Caley, SolomonEdwards’ COO and long-time Star of Hope board member, said this is a favorite annual service activity. “Nothing compares to giving back in a very tangible way to the amazing ministry at Star of Hope,” Candace said.
About Star of Hope
Star of Hope is a Christ-centered community supporting Houston’s homeless men, women and children. The organization operates a Women and Family Development Center, which can house more than 500 families, and a Men’s Development Center that houses up to 300 men. Candace said the annual backpack service event is just another way Star of Hope aims to further its goal of “ending homelessness … one life, one family at a time.” Visit the Star of Hope website for more information about their work in the greater Houston area.
